The prince of the mystical eleven kingdom of Lesaria, Ballad Azure once led a sheltered but demanding life as he was groomed to become king. However, during his adolescence, his kingdom fell to a terrible cataclysm which not only destroyed his kingdom, but wiped its very world from existence. The prince doesn't understand why he was the sole survivor, nor why he was thrown into another dimension, but one way or another he wound up on Earth, allied with the supergroup Project Corona.

He also found himself mysteriously connected to the spirits of his tragically deceased people. A channel for the unified will of his people, Ballad carries a heavy burden and a great gift; he is constantly surrounded by his peoples' emotions and desires, and their power. Through it, he can blind or paralyse enemies, cause pain so intense it seems wounding, shield himself and his allies, and even summon the spirits of his former royal guard to posses his enemies or fight on his behalf.

Ballad is an elven prince who happens to be the last of his people after they were wiped out, in a cataclysm that left him as an extradimensional exile who eventually found a home with Project Corona. Now he summons the spirits of his people to fuel various magical abilities that effectively match up with the "Illusion" and "Force Field" sets. He's also another male character who uses the female model, which can look quite masculine with the armoured chest and 'sinister' texture.

Ballad's main source of inspiration was actually an existing character - the original build of Midnight Ruse, who was a spirit summoner. Ever since a certain plot in which Ruse's pimp/housemate Jakob of Malleus convinced his summoned spirits to have their way with their master, Fox was floating the idea of an Illusion controller whose "Blue Man Group" were the spirits of ancient warriors (mostly so she could keep the majority of that scene, just with a more innocent subject and more noble spirits). The idea was delicious to her.

Personality

Ballad is a noble, fair-minded young man with a strong sense of justice and a great deal of compassion. He's generally optimistic and upbeat, in a dorky kind of way (since his idea of "cool" comes not only from another time, but another dimension!), but sometimes it's a little bit strained, and it becomes apparent that he's just trying to keep peoples' spirits up (no pun intended).

Privately, Ballad still has a lot of grief to deal with after the catastrophic destruction of his homeland and his people. This is only made worse by the fact that he is constantly privy to the disembodied, unified emotions of his people - not conscious thoughts, but a constant feeling pushing in on his own emotions. He does his best to not let this get in the way of his role as a hero, though, and this is why he likes to keep busy - usually, if he can direct the spirits' attention to a tangible goal, their energy is focused on the task at hand, rather than floating around aimlessly in his mind. Ultimately, in dealing with them, he shows that he has great emotional strength.

Character History

Ballad's history is not a subject he likes to speak of, given its unpleasant nature, but most of it was confided to the administration of Project Corona upon his admission. To begin with, he was born in the Elven Kingdom of Lesaria, which - judging from his story - was located somewhere in another dimension. By his description, it was a magic-filled, pseudo-medieval fantasy world akin to the works of most modern fantasy authors, though its exact nature is somewhat vague.

Ballad was raised in his parents' royal court, groomed as the heir to his kingdom, and trained in the use of magic from an early age, none of which he seems unhappy about. However, at some stage during his adolescence, his kingdom fell to a terrible cataclysm, possibly magical in nature, which not only killed all of his people and destroyed his kingdom, but wiped its very world from existence. The prince doesn't understand why he was able to survive, nor why he wound up thrown into another dimension, but one way or another he wound up on Earth. His unusual connection to his peoples' spirits also began at this time, and it is they who gently led him to Paragon City, and Project Corona.

Affiliations

Ballad is affiliated with the Supergroup Project Corona, having been charitably taken in by the group after his arrival in Paragon City. However, he has remained a rather quiet and solitary individual, and is yet to have formed any strong bonds with other members of the group.

Ballad is the avatar and vessel for all of his peoples' spirits, but generally he cannot distinguish separate personalities and consciousnesses from each other. The exception to this is The Royal Guardians. Devoted soldiers who were the prince's personal bodyguards in life, these loyal individuals are for some reason much more powerful than the other spirits, and still seem to have retained some of their individuality and awareness in death. Though their strength has a distinct ebb and flow to it, sometimes they are even able to communicate clearly with Ballad as individuals. Although he doesn't know for sure, Ballad suspects that it is the Guard who are responsible for bringing him to Paragon City, and who maintain control over the spirits when he can't.

Powers and Abilities

Ballad's powers are magical in nature, but they are not the standard powers of his Hero Corps classification. Whilst they bear a marked similarity to powers called "Illusions" and "Force Fields", all of the young prince's powers stem from the same source - the souls of his tragically deceased people. A channel for the unified will of his people, Ballad carries a heavy burden and a great gift; he is constantly surrounded by his peoples' emotions and desires, and their power. Through it, he can blind or paralyse enemies, cause pain so intense it seems wounding, shield himself and his allies, and even allow the spirits of his former royal guard to possess his enemies, using their own strength against each other.

Ballad is a well-educated young man who has been thoroughly acquainted with a variety of topics, focusing mainly on history (of Lesaria, of course, not Earth), philosophy and theology, and arcane theory. He's also had firmly-instilled lessons in etiquette, allowing him to manage in a variety of delicate, high-class social situations.

In addition, he has a solid background in military tactics - though he never had to command a battle himself, he would have in his adulthood, and was trained with an eye toward this. This training made him a natural candidate for Project Corona, and has only been reinforced by the Project's focus on teamwork and strategy.

Equipment

Due to being ultimately quite frail, Ballad wears a suit of finely-crafted elven armour, with matching gauntlets and greaves. Due to his lack of physical strength, it also features a decorative inlay made from a magical stone native to Lesaria, which makes it lighter and more manoeuvrable.

Weaknesses

Without his magic, Ballad is a skinny little elf with no superpowers of note - he's susceptible to all the normal human weaknesses, and a few more due to his somewhat delicate constitution. He's fit, but he's simply not physically powerful. Also, he's somewhat naive and not yet at home with his surroundings on Earth - and, while his social education left him well prepared for high-class dealings, he's still at a loss when it comes to ordinary people.

Constantly dealing with his peoples' spirits is also a great emotional drain on Ballad, and he can become troubled and unfocused if he can't escape them now and then (usually this means rest or meditation, though in times of desperation he has been known to request magical interference from his elders in the Project. He loves his people tremendously, but he does need a break sometimes.

Lastly, Ballad has also been observed to exhibit several sensitivities normally associated with fae, such as a weakness to cold iron - just being near it causes him headaches and nausea. This has led Project Corona's researchers to believe that either this particular type of elf must have the traits of both "races", or that his lineage must include fae blood as well as elven.

Other Notes

Trivia

  • Ballad's Guardians are probably all in love with him, to some degree or another, due to the story which inspired him. They'll be fleshed out more once he reaches the "Phantom Army" power, and the Illusion set's later pets.
